Applying Art in Your Interior Where Do You Begin

Art should be included early in the design process

For me, art in an interior does not begin with furniture, colors, or materials, but with a feeling. Often, art is precisely the place where that feeling first takes shape. In many interior projects, art is only considered at the very end, almost as a final styling layer. Yet I notice that when a work of art is introduced from the beginning, it can give direction. It can determine the energy of a space, tell a story, and touch something that does not need explanation.

Art when everything feels right you simply know

When I collaborate with designers or architects early in the process, a natural dialogue emerges. Together we explore how form, material, scale, and atmosphere can reinforce one another, so that a work of art does not become a separate addition, but an integral part of the interior that moves with the space. In these situations, I often design my sculptures specifically for a certain location. We look together at the way light falls, sight lines, rhythm, and how a piece relates to its surroundings. I love it when everything aligns and when art, interior, and architecture elevate one another instead of existing side by side.
Recently, I experienced just how powerful a collaboration with a strong designer can be. Miriam Borsboom of Studio MBC in Reeuwijk incorporated two of my sculptures early on into one of her beautiful interior designs. Because she integrated the works at such an early stage, they were given the space to truly come into their own. In the right setting, with carefully considered sight lines, materials, and lighting, the sculptures came to life as if they had always belonged there. That is what strong design can do. It elevates art, gives it meaning within a space, and allows it to add something you feel the moment you step inside. It is a privilege to see my work move with such an environment, resonate within it, and find a place that feels right.

Threaded my new sculpture collection

The Threaded collection was born from a desire to make connection tangible. In this exploration, I literally draw lines using thread, composite, and metal. As a result, the sculptures appear to emerge from one continuous, flowing movement. They are open, feminine, layered, and carry both calm and tension within them. I often hear that these works bring depth, softness, and presence to a space. Because they allow light to pass through, they seem almost to breathe. They add character without dominating the room and invite you to come closer.

Collaborating as an artist with interior professionals

Working with interior architects and design teams is one of the most inspiring aspects of my practice. In my gallery or studio, we place materials and colors side by side, talk about atmosphere, and explore what a space truly needs. Sometimes a sculpture becomes the starting point of a design, sometimes it is the finishing touch. Both situations carry something special.
What touches me time and again is the moment when someone recognizes themselves in a form, a line, or a posture. That intuitive knowing, this feels right. From that moment on, it is my task to ensure that the work comes into its own technically, aesthetically, and spatially.

Where can you see my latest collection

The Threaded collection can be seen in my gallery in Bodegraven, at ETC in Culemborg, at Nidum in Grave, and by appointment on location. Are you curious about my latest collection, or do you feel a desire for a work of art that truly suits you and your interior? Perhaps you are looking for something unique, something that tells a story or captures a feeling that words cannot always carry. Are you unsure whether a sculpture truly fits you? You are always welcome to experience my art in your own home first. I am happy to arrange a trial placement on location. Together we translate your vision into a work that fits not only your space, but also your life.
You are very welcome.

With love, Petra
